Speaking at the press event, Vikela Rankin, managing director Motorola Solutions South Africa, said public safety and enterprise professionals need communication solutions that help translate information from multiple sources into intelligence, thus ensuring safer cities. However, technology investments in public safety today must be long lasting, integrated and easy to deploy and use.

Mark Walker, director – Insights & Vertical Industries IDC Middle East, Turkey and Africa, said, “Terror, natural disasters and crimes have affected the lives of millions and inflicted damages of trillions of dollars in the last 20 years. Consequently, worldwide homeland security spending is rising and is expected reach EURO 215 billion by 2018, compared to EURO 157 billion in 2013. Overall, the number of crimes committed per 1000 people in South Africa has decreased by 2.8% in 2012/3 and public safety investments are growing and will reach EURO 10.2 billion in 2014. The technologies needed to build smart public safety solutions are here now and action needs to be taken to implement them and create smart, viable, stable, prosperous and growing cities of the future.”
Peter Goulding, Motorola Solutions’ premier public safety specialist, and former chief superintendent at the Metropolitan Police says that data is the key factor for improving public safety – and using it smartly is a crucial factor for safer cities.

Currently 99% of all recorded surveillance video is not being used at real-time or not being used at all; these technologies transform videos to valuable assets for qualitative and accurate decision making.”

Motorola’s Command & Control solution helps officers approach an incident armed with more operational intelligence.
