New access control receiver

June 2009 Access Control & Identity Management

Local security solutions innovator, Sherlotronics, has announced the availability of the latest in its home-grown range of access control receivers, which features advanced code-hopping and encryption technologies for multi-user multigate remote control access systems. Designed, developed and manufactured at Sherlotronics’ premises in Randburg, the latest offering has been introduced to enhance gate security for townhouse complexes or members of gated communities.

“More and more people are opting to live in townhouse complexes or gated communities,” says Simon Knott, managing director of Sherlotronics. “This is due, in point, to the heightened security these areas ensure and we are seeing many communities of this kind being built at record rates and sizes. While gates and fences definitely reduce unauthorised vehicle and foot traffic, the effectiveness of these security measures is only as good as the access control system that is in place.”

Knott says that older access control systems were relatively simple to override and, as the first company to adopt and deploy code-hopping technologies in South Africa, Sherlotronics now builds all of its access control devices with inbuilt KeeloQ code hopping encryption.

“Conventional remote control systems offered limited security levels because the embedded signals they transmitted were typically fixed and the number of possible code combinations were quite small, which led to unauthorised use and hacking,” he says. “The incorporation of KeeloQ code hopping technologies means our access control receivers are virtually impenetrable. It uses a complex non-linear algorithm to scramble the transmission sequence circumventing code capturing since a different code is used with every click of the user’s remote controls. What this means is that code tracking criminals are unable to calculate remote control keys, no matter how many transmissions they capture, lessoning the risk of unauthorised entry.”

Not only is the new system highly secure, it is also very user friendly with an LCD screen and easy to manipulate graphic user interface, which makes configuring, adding or deleting remote control users as well as event logging very simple to execute. The receiver is sold with free software and is downloadable from the Sherlotronics site, which allows security administrators to easily program 4000 remotes in 500 groups ‘houses’ with eight remotes ‘users’ per group.

“Complex tasks have been greatly simplified as the software enables efficient and reliable event logging and simplifies the previously arduous task of adding and removing or barring remote control users from the system,” says Knott.

Housed in a weather and tamperproof box, the access control receiver board incorporates a faster MCU that can decode all 4000 remotes within less than 500 milliseconds, which means the gate opens and closes faster, further enhancing the security features offered by the range. “With this announcement, we are offering higher levels of encryption, greater levels of user friendliness and an affordable price to security conscious townhouse developers across South Africa,” Knott concludes.
