Most people know the Cradle of Humankind for its historical significance and as a location for a pleasant day out in the country. Sadly, this picturesque part of the country is also a fast growing, high-crime area.
Residents in the area are in a position of having to look after themselves when it comes to criminal activity due to a lack of resources and other factors plaguing the area. Trevor D'Oliveira, a local resident, has come up with a plan that will make the area safer and assist the security authorities, as well as a plan to secure a large residential estate without building walls to spoil its natural setting.
Securing the estate will be done by creating virtual walls with VideoIQ IP cameras. These cameras include on-board storage and intelligence, and will monitor the perimeter of the estate on a 24x7 basis. Because of the intelligence in the cameras, they can be programmed to raise the alarm in the central control room only when an unknown person crosses the boundary.
Operators will be able to identify the risk posed by the intruder and dispatch a security team to intercept, or call the police to assist.
This means the estate does not have to employ multiple operators to monitor the perimeter cameras all the time, but can use its human resources more effectively while allowing the VideoIQ cameras to handle the monitoring work. All footage will be recorded at high-resolution to ensure it can be presented in court if necessary.
Taking the intelligent capabilities of IP cameras a step further, D'Oliveira also has plans to monitor the entrances to the Cradle and capture the number plates of vehicles entering. These numbers will be compared to known plates belonging to criminals or stolen vehicles, giving the security forces a chance to intercept these potential perpetrators before they have a chance to do any damage.
