IAC goes Hemispheric

March 2010 News & Events

German IP camera manufacturer Mobotix, together with IAC, its local distributor, hosted a partner day in Johannesburg in February. The keynote speaker was Dr Ralf Hinkel, CEO of Mobotix.

Hinkel started his presentation demonstrating how Mobotix can cut the costs of surveillance and the bandwidth required through its high-resolution offerings. Mobotix IP cameras all carry intelligence in the form of a CPU and a Linux operating system on its cameras to ensure users get to see what they require without requiring expensive servers and DVRs to process high-bandwidth, high-resolution images. Hinkel claims this decentralised approach makes for lower costs and improved performance.

The company has no moving parts in its cameras to further increase the reliability of the systems. Another cost-effective feature of the Mobotix experience is that the company provides its management software at no cost. You can even manage other camera brands from the same console.

The highlight of the keynote was the introduction of the Hemispheric camera. This system offers 360° coverage of a room or 180° of a specified area, but without any moving parts. The software Mobotix has developed takes the somewhat warped 360° image it records and converts it into video streams users can understand, from 180° views of an area or smaller focused areas of interest – or a combination of the two. The high-resolution Hemispheric manages its images on-camera, as with other Mobotix IP cameras and will export the specific images users require.

Going beyond IP camera hardware, Mobotix also announced updated versions of its camera management software, available at no cost, and announced it would be expanding its repertoire to include access control solutions for the home market.
