Portable tracking

February 2010 Surveillance

Beget makes tracking people or vehicles simpler.

Complementing its suite of GPS/GPRS-based products, Beget Solutions is now marketing a locally designed handheld tracking device that provides realtime data on a person’s or vehicle’s mobility and whereabouts.

The tracking device can be used in fleet management, the security industry to monitor guard activity and patrolling or as a personal tracking system to monitor and control any person that is not office bound such as travelling sales people, site inspectors, area managers, installers, technicians or delivery staff.

By locking onto GPS satellites, the unit supplies a steady stream of accurate positional data such as the direction of movement, the speed and the exact location. Required information parameters can be defined by the user with four settings modes available, ranging from normal tracking to collecting in-depth information.

The Beget Tracker works off a GSM/GPRS cellular SIM card to communicate with the web interface and the user. A prepaid card allows the user to reload airtime on the device at any time at normal top up recharge facilities. Cost of airtime is inexpensive: for example, R100 airtime would last for 24 months of normal use in the default configuration.

The device is the same size as a MP3 player and is built for easy and unobtrusive use in a pocket or handbag. The Beget Tracker makes use of rechargeable batteries that can be charged via the supplied cigarette lighter charger with a detachable USB to Mini USB cable that also allows charging from a PC’s USB port.

Two battery configurations are available: the Slimline version can last for up to 25 hours of continuous use. When the unit is standing still, it switches off completely and does not use any power. The Beget Tracker with extended battery life will last three times longer than the Slimline unit.

A panic button allows the user to send a 'Please Call Me' signal to a designated cellphone directly from the device and a panic SMS can be forwarded to any number of recipients that have been set up on the Web interface. This function is particularly useful for guards to warn a supervisor of distress by sending an SMS directly to his cellphone from the unit without going through the Internet as well as sending the alarm in the normal way.

For intense fleet management, vehicles can be tracked in realtime on computer and various reports generated showing vehicle movements with full history reports archived in monthly or 24-hour batches. An optional Track Driver Identification system identifies which driver is driving which vehicle. This is linked to historical reports to analyse work hours, where the vehicle was driven and distance travelled. This ensures driver accountability and is a powerful facility to identify road traffic offences, measure driver performance, and can be used for time and attendance purposes as well.
