Securing your perimeter the intelligent way

November 2008 Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection

C3 Shared Services specialises in the design and implementation of high-end perimeter security solutions and military grade intrusion detection systems with the focus being primarily on the implementation of intelligent video combined with thermal cameras. The combination of thermal camera and intelligent video delivers a 99% probability of detection of intruders in no light conditions and inclement weather with low false alarm rates. Your perimeter is now equally secure day and night.

Both directors, Brendon Cowley and Nick Grange, have been involved in providing integrated electronic solutions for more than a decade; and as a result bring both a comprehensive and extensive wealth of knowledge in providing effective and working perimeter security solutions for high risk and high value areas.

We realise that talk is cheap and that actions speak louder than words. How is this combination of intelligent video and thermal cameras actually performing in the field?

To date, C3 Shared Services has had enormous success with numerous installations of ioimage’s intelligent video analytics and Opgal’s thermal cameras on various sites in South Africa such as residential estates, refineries, correctional facilities and car showrooms.

Below are two good examples:

1) Xanadu Eco Park: R2,1 billion residential eco estate in Hartebeespoort, Gauteng.

Problem: Xanadu Eco-Park is an upmarket residential estate surrounded by 8 km of indigenous bush. The south eastern perimeter borders an informal settlement. The park had unsuccessfully used traditional methods of security, eg: electric fencing, CCD high speed dome cameras, solar power, etc. These methods proved inadequate and insufficient resulting in occasional breaches of their perimeter. Intruders tampered with the electric fencing to gain access to the estate. The high-speed dome cameras were inoperable at night due to inadequate lighting resulting in security personnel having to physically locate the cause of each and every alarm.

Solution: The only solution in keeping with the eco friendly nature of the estate whilst ensuring the safety of the residents, was to deploy a system that would function equally well day and night, with no additional lighting required. A system that would alert control room operators to any breach of the perimeter and inform them of where the intrusion was located. C3 Shared Services installed 21 channels of intelligent video combined with thermal cameras. The perimeter security system could now detect intruders in pitch black darkness at distances of up to 350 metres and enable the control room operators to make the correct and speedy decision to alert a designated armed response team to the area where the intrusion was detected.

2) Platinum refinery

Problem: The high security area (HSA) of a South African-based platinum refinery required an edge technology that would provide them with a high probability of intruder detection with a low false alarm rate. Their current intelligent intrusion detection system was proving to be ineffective as the amount of false alarms were very high on a daily basis, resulting in the control room operators losing interest as to the cause of each and every alarm.

Solution: ioimage was strenuously tested over a period of two months and in a shoot-out between ioimage and two other video analytics systems, ioimage came out the winner hands down with a 99% reduction in false alarms. ioimage was specifically chosen over the other two competitors for its 99% probability of detection whilst maintaining an extremely low false alarm rate and withstanding the harsh environmental and poor lighting conditions of the site. 96 channels of intelligent video were installed on site by C3 Shared Services.

The benefits of intelligent video are clear. It watches over areas that are too dangerous for security guards to patrol. It provides the ability to monitor wide areas and detect not just short range movements such as an infrared motion detector, but true behaviour scenarios. It can differentiate people from small animals, shadows, other objects reducing the amount of false alarms drastically (in most cases by 99%). Security guards cannot be everywhere at once and all too often they discover the problem only after the damage is done and the criminals have already fled. With automatic intelligent video monitoring, security officers are tipped off rather than having to discover events for themselves during scheduled patrols. Thanks to intelligent video and its ability to automatically detect an intruder, security guards only need to view and respond to actual alarm events rather than watching hours of motionless video. Studies have proved that after 22 minutes control room operators miss 95% of scene activity!

Backed by the extensive technical knowledge and years of experience of both directors and armed with ioimage’s intelligent video analytics and Opgal’s specialised thermal cameras, you can rest assured that any perimeter secured by C3 Shared Services will be exactly that: secure!
