There is an endless array of choices when it comes to surveillance cameras, from analogue to IP, low light, some with infrared capabilities, thermals and an assortment of options for each. So how does your average camera buyer decide what the best option is for his/her needs?

You certainly cannot rely on the specifications on the box. While nobody can say the claims of the vendors are not accurate, they were obtained in perfect environments. They were not obtained out in the field where light intensity varies and objects move around randomly. And they were not tested in environments where the installer offering the cheapest quote installed them in a hurry paying scant, if any attention, to the requirements of the customer.
One can rely on your consultant or integrator, but how do you know they will recommend the best deal for you and not the best deal for themselves?
The answer is to do your own homework and make the time to run proof-of-concept exercises in your specific environment to ensure that what you get is what you actually need. Using a camera testing solution such as the Rotakin/Digikin test from CCTV in Focus SA does more than check if your pictures look ‘nice’. It ensures your colour, resolution, focus, low-light results and more, match your needs.
There are, of course, other tests one can run, but the point is the person paying for the solution must be able to fairly judge whether the cameras being purchased will do the job.

What to look for
There are many issues to consider when buying a surveillance camera(s). You may, for example, install them in an area with depth that has a lot of movement, in which case you could look at systems with an automatic focus. If you are installing a camera in your lobby, a manually focus solution may be just the thing.
If you are running cables to connect your cameras to the network, perhaps you should consider whether your infrastructure will support Power over Ethernet. If it does, you can save the cost and hassle of installing power cables and supply the electricity required through your network cable.
Then there is the question of resolution. While there are still many vendors and installers out there talking about TV lines, today the hot buzzwords are megapixel and high definition. If Curiosity, which is currently driving around taking snaps on Mars, can manage to send back startling images of the planet with a 2-megapixel camera, do you really need a 10-megapixel camera in your lobby?

Of course, you may be tasked with surveillance in a stadium or at a solar farm, where more complex lenses and better resolution would be required. It may sound absurd in a world that is quickly converging onto the IP platform, but many camera installations will deliver the results required with an old-fashioned analogue solution in place. The key is to know what it is you want out of your surveillance installation. And it will help to look at what you want to achieve today as well as what you will need in the future. Making sure your chosen technology has a future roadmap as well as guaranteed backwards compatibility can be the most cost effective ‘must-have’ on your specifications list.
