Eliminating forced gate opening scenarios

ET Nice is a strategic combination of 30 years of local designing, manufacturing and supporting access automation technology for the demanding South African environment, and the international footprint and expertise of the Italian access automation manufacturer, Nice S.p.A.

The company’s products bear testimony to an emphasis on durability and simplicity. “It’s important to design and manufacture products that can withstand the power spikes and rough handling we commonly experience in South Africa. Furthermore, we endeavour to create solutions that are designed to provide installers with a simple and logical access automation solution for their clients,” says ET Nice sales and marketing executive, Gerald Kirsten.

The ET Nice gate and beam monitoring alarm, which comes standard with the ET Nice Drive range of gate operators, is a good example of development focused on local security requirements.

“The weak point in perimeter security has always been at one’s entrance gate. Criminals can easily lift a gate off its tracks and enter the premises; thereby bypassing what the homeowner assumed was an impenetrable barrier. Our gate and beam monitoring alarm offers a solution to this problem and puts the control firmly back in the domain of the end user,” says Kirsten.

The built-in ‘gate forced open’ alarm is the first of its kind to come as a standard feature in a gate operator. Kirsten explains that integrating this feature with the end user’s alarm system is as simple as adding the ET Nice micro transmitter to the alarm output of the Drive series controller and programming this transmitter into a receiver that is connected to the alarm panel.

When activated by the gate alarm feature, the transmitter transmits a wireless signal up to 750 metres in any direction. The alarm panel receiver will trigger the alarm, which will in turn notify the armed response company, providing them with a valuable additional response time, thereby making them much more effective in responding to the intrusion.

The gate motor alarm feature provides 24/7 monitoring of the gate’s position and, should an intruder force the gate open, the end user’s home alarm will be automatically triggered. Similarly, should attempts be made to steal the gate motor, the alarm will also be activated.

The same monitoring and alarm feature applies to safety beams, whereby tampering will result in a message being sent via the gate motor to the alarm panel. “This means that if the safety beams are obstructed for more than 20 seconds when the gate is in the closed position, the alarm will be instantly triggered,” says Kirsten.

Kirsten explains that there is also a direct benefit for residential complexes where it may be customary for individuals to jam the gates in the open position. The estate manager can provide a predefined acceptable gate open time period and the installer programs this into the system. The system will then monitor the duration of the gate open period and if the gate does not reach the closed position within the predetermined period, the alarm will be activated.

“We invite interested parties to see the system in action in the video loaded on the ET Nice Facebook page,” says Kirsten.
