True system collaboration

October 2017 Editor's Choice, Surveillance, Integrated Solutions

According to Bernard Senekal, director at Naxian Systems, there is a general romantic notion that regards PSIM as being the integration of so-called silos of traditionally standalone systems. “At Naxian we have moved forward from this and we see every device, system, person, data source and process as just another signal. The security industry is still filled with bespoke methods and protocols for achieving assimilation between the PSIM and other signal data, but we have simplified the process. Our focus regarding integration is the delivery of true value from the various signals that we cannot only obtain data from, but also send information to.”

Standalone security systems do not achieve organisational peace of mind, de-risk or optimise efficiencies, rather the value that they offer equates to no more than another begrudgingly checked compliance box. Naxian’s PSIM allows not only for the collection of data from various different systems, but moreover for true collaboration amongst systems in order to drive down costs. This is achieved by creating optimal efficiencies in organisational processes, while achieving minimum system, device and process downtime and enhanced de-risking. All of this adds to an organisation’s bottom line profits, says Senekal.

He points out that because Naxian owns the intellectual property for all elements of its PSIM offering, the company has decided to sell it as PSIM as a Service. This means that clients who purchase Naxian’s PSIM software no longer have to be concerned about a large upfront capital investment. “We quote on the delivery of a solution based on its complexity and then we spread the software costs into a monthly spend over time. This is a unique commercial offering because the client should see a return on investment from the first month that the system becomes operational. The client saves more money from day one than what they would have spent on maintenance and operational costs, if they didn’t have the system in place.”

Naxian can further distinguish its PSIM offer from others in the market in a number of ways. “When the resources currently working at Naxian today started in the field of system integration around 15 years or more ago, they had to develop and engineer techniques that the rest of the world developing similar solutions did not have to do. Simply put, the rest of the world could assume certain technology building blocks would be in place, whereas in South Africa we could not,” says Senekal.

Examples of this would be available processing power, bandwidth and skilled users of the final solution. “Being a proudly South African technology developer means that we are frugal, and hence extremely efficient, with regard to the way that we deal with data, processing and user experience. This makes the overall platform and solutions we offer not only comparable, but even better than those of international counterparts.”

Perhaps the most distinctive part of Naxian’s overall solution is that the company has its own internationally patented artificial intelligence. Known as ANNIE, she has been spliced into Naxian’s platform and delivers results that no other linear-based PSIM system – read ‘all’ PSIM systems – is able to offer. Being a learning machine intelligence, ANNIE ensures that operations continuously get better over time and that anomalies that humans could never detect inside big sets of historic data that are constantly compared to current and real-time data, are indicated and acted on.

Senekal believes that it is time to tackle some of the insecurities that the ‘uninformed’ have with regard to PSIM. In other words, what it is and what it isn’t; what it can do; and reassurances around non disruption of standalone systems being integrated onto a common security platform. “We invite the market to interact with us and to personally experience the benefits they can derive from Naxian’s PSIM as a Service.”
