Surveillance in a box

Loss within the retail sector due to theft and shoplifting is a widely understood challenge. Until recently, the cost of investing in an IP video surveillance solution was prohibitive, leaving many smaller retailers at risk of immense losses.

Marc van Jaarsveldt, consultant, The Surveillance Factory, says that the need for an affordable retail solution in kit form was imperative: “Both retailers and small businesses of all kinds were in dire need of assistance to manage an increasing amount of theft. Together with Axis Communications, we have come up with a ‘Surveillance in a Box’ offer, which is aimed at alleviating the security pressures these businesses are under.”

He says that investing in an IP video surveillance solution provides several long-term benefits such as a decrease in retail shrinkage, increased store profits, potentially reduced insurance premiums, and most importantly a decrease in the amount of theft cases. “A surveillance solution will also help create a safer and more enjoyable shopping experience for consumers.”

The Surveillance in a Box offer includes a discreet, four-camera Axis surveillance solution ideal for indoor use in small retail stores. The necessary hardware for setting up the system is included in the kit, while the Axis video management software is free for download on PC and mobile devices. All the components, from cameras to storage and video management, are fully integrated for optimal installation and use.

In terms of use of the solution, he says that almost all stores share the same basic elements which require camera surveillance. The exit, entrance, payment station and sales floor are all areas in or near high-traffic spots and therefore require surveillance: “By placing cameras in these areas, you will definitely reduce theft, while also deterring any employee or customer who may consider shoplifting.”
