It was an exciting day for Grade 11 learners from Allanridge Combined School on 31 August when they spent the day at ADT’s Head Office in Sandton learning about a career in security.
Fifty-two learners, all part of the ADT Teach programme, came to learn about what happens in the ADT Head Office each day. The learners were divided into two groups and taken to the monitoring centre, the customer contact centre, the technical department and generally shown around the offices as they learnt about all the vital parts that make the ADT organisation operate efficiently. At each point the learners met the head of departments who shared insights into their area of expertise.
The learners were then addressed by Mike Kidson, the GM of ADT, and Wayne Whateley, an area sales manager. “By chance, the Career Day coincided with a visit by Tyco executives from the USA so the learners were also exposed to the international organisation behind the ADT brand,” says Kudakwashe Sibanda, who runs the ADT Teach programme with fellow teacher Jacob Mathumba. “It also happened to be Spring Day at the offices so the learners got to enjoy the Spring Day fun with ADT colleagues.”
Each of these learners receives weekly lessons from the ADT Teach tutor as they develop their IT skills as part of the ADT Teach programme. “These learners are committed and hard working. Because of their newly acquired IT skills and their eagerness to learn, we have no doubt that they will be a great asset to the country’s workforce when they enter it in a few years from now. We felt it was important that they be made aware of the many job opportunities available in the private security industry. I believe this was achieved through this Career Day,” says Sibanda, “and they had fun while learning too!”
