Road blockers to prevent forced entry

Issue 3 2022 Financial (Industry)

Securing cash entails much more than the surveillance cameras, the security officers, the access control systems, the money boxes, the safes and the physical banks. It should also include last-line-of-defence mechanisms such as road blockers to prevent forced entry.

Road blockers provide higher levels of security with built-in stopping power and are used extensively for premises such as banks, embassies, bullion depots, cargo parks, ports and truck parks.

Turnstar recently manufactured five high-security Shield road blockers for a bank head office in Tanzania. The road blockers, each 2 m wide and 800 mm high, were manufactured from hot dip galvanised structural steel and are raised by means of a powerful hydraulic ram and pump system.

“A PLC and inverter offer exceptional motor and functional control and a built-in loop detector ensures safe operation for authorised vehicles. In addition, five Velocity traffic barriers and two Speedgate Express lanes were installed and connected to the digital access control system,” says Craig Sacks, CEO of Turnstar Systems.

The fully automatic road blocker utilises the latest trusted hydraulic technology, ensuring a long durable life with the minimum recommended maintenance required. The 100% duty rating means that the road blockers are designed for continuous and frequent use.

The Shield road blockers are powered by a single-phase (up to 3 m) or three-phase (from 3,5 m and more) hydraulic power pack. Able to cope with a load capacity of a 32-ton tipper truck with 10,6 tons per axle, the road blockers have operational speeds of 2 to 5 s depending on their height. “In this instance, the operational speed is 5 s and a hand pump provides manual override for raising and lowering operations in the event of a power failure. This high-speed road blocker comes complete with safety sensors and emergency raise override. The integrated OPTIC LED strip on the upper edge of the blocker arc provides maximum visibility, safety and aesthetic compliance,” says Sacks.

The Shield road blocker integrates with all access control systems. In this specific application at the Tanzanian bank, it has an interlocking function with the Velocity traffic barriers to ensure maximised security.
